Cricket has been affected by a coronavirus in Pakistan

In this pandemic situation, like other fields, the Cricket match series is also affected by Coronavirus in Pakistan. Up till mid of March, all activities went well; after that, coronavirus cases surged in Pakistan. All events, whether social or sports, were postponed for a short duration. As far as Cricket is concerned, we shall discuss all aspects one by one in detail:

Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2020:

Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2020 was the 5th session of PSL to be held, this Twenty 20 cricket league was established in 2015 by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). For the first time, it was going too held entirely in Pakistan. So this league was initiated on 20 February 2020. But due to surges of COVID-19, for safety purposes, PCB suspended all other events, as the last match conducted was between Karachi Kings and Quetta Gladiators on 15th march 2020 hosted in Karachi, while the next scheduled game on 17 March 2020.

The two semifinals and final match scheduled on 17th and 20th march was suspended with immediate effect. All other domestic competitions and cricket competitions were suspended. In the first semifinal, Multan Sultan was supposed to play against Peshawar Zalmi. In the second semifinal, Karachi King was supposed to play against Lahore Qalanders; all were supposed to be hosted in Lahore. But Pakistan Cricket Board announced to postpone the tournament, and the rescheduled dates will be reported according to the betterment of the Pandemic situation.

Pakistan Cricket board first decided in late March to declare winners based on tournament standing positions, but later this idea didn’t work.

At the start of July 2020, Pakistan Cricket Board decided to resume the league series in November 2020 depending on the situation of Coronavirus in Pakistan.

Series of online session of Cricket:

Regardless of the pandemic conditions, figuring out how to proceed with exercises was an imperative need. So the arrangement of online meetings helped the cricketers to stay centered and utilizing time. The talks began on 27 April 2020 and proceeded for about fourteen days. These talks were directed by the legends of Pakistan Cricket, who indicated best exhibitions. These legends were Javed Miandad, Wasim Akram, Rashid Latif, Mushtaq Ahmed, Mohammad Yousuf, Moin Khan, Younus Khan, and Shoaib Akhtar. During these live sessions, the main topic of discussion was about batting, fast and spin bowling and wicket keeping, all delivered by the legend of the concerned specialization. They also worried about the significance of control, disposition, challenging work, and certainty as an indispensable piece of winning the game.

Cancellation of Netherlands tour:

Cricket, like other sports, is severely affected by the pandemic situation. As three One day international cricket matches were scheduled in Netherlands and two T20 in Ireland. However, in light of the current pandemic situation, In April 2020, the Dutch government suspended all country events until September 2020. The match series was scheduled for 4 July 2020, and it was a 50-over match.

But now it is desperately under consideration for looking for alternatives and rescheduling tours.

Tour of England:

Three test match series and three twenty20s internationals had been scheduled in August being hosted in England. The selectors selected Twenty-nine players in the case for replacement if any of them falls ill. Their departure was confirmed on 28 June 2020. But In England, they were quarantined for 14 days in a Pandemic free place, where they were allowed to practice in that confined area. The team hadn’t practiced since 17 March 2020 due to the suspended domestic tournament Pakistan Supreme League 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Before departure, all the selected players were tested for COVID-19. Ten of them were tested positive for COVID-19. All were asymptomatic for the disease. They were then self-isolated. After being tested negative 3 times, they then went to England.

After reaching England, all cricketers were tested for Corona Virus by England and Wales Cricket Board Medical Penal. Luckily none of them was tested positive for COVID-19. But all were quarantined as per SOPs.

Funds for Cricket players:

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced to support financially to the first-class cricketers and other stakeholders who are facing hardships financially in the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown situation. For this, PCB proposed funds. But the funds are available only for deserving candidates. A limitation criteria for this purpose was designed, and funds were provided to the excellent candidates. It was the best step to stand by people during a crisis.

Conclusion:

Like other fields of life, Cricket in Pakistan is also affected by the Corona Virus pandemic. The most affected series was Pakistan Supreme League 2020, in which semifinals and final matches were suspended due to the current epidemic and are supposed to be assumed in November 2020. Then online series started for utilizing time properly in a lockdown situation; legends of the cricket team had lecture sessions with the player cricketers. The online fitness tests for women were then conducted for Cricket, to avoid time wastage and proper utilization and maintenance of standards. The significant loss was the cancellation of the tour to the Netherlands due to suspended activities by Dutch Government till September 2020.
